Where does ST. Valentine’s Day come from
The tradition of Valentine's Day, or St. Valentine's Day, has roots in both Christian and ancient Roman history. The day is named after one or more early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine, but the exact origins are not entirely clear, and there are several legends associated with the name.
One popular legend suggests that Valentine was a Roman priest who lived during the reign of Emperor Claudius II in the 3rd century. The emperor had banned marriages for young men, believing that single men made better soldiers. However, Valentine defied this decree and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. Eventually, he was discovered, arrested, and sentenced to death. While in prison, Valentine is said to have sent a love letter to the jailer's daughter, signing it "From your Valentine," a phrase that remains popular in Valentine's Day greetings today. Valentine was executed on February 14, around the year 269 AD.
Another legend links Valentine's Day to the Roman festival of Lupercalia, a fertility celebration held in mid-February. During this festival, young men would draw names of young women from a jar, and the chosen couple would be paired for the duration of the festival—and sometimes longer.
The association of Valentine's Day with romantic love gained prominence in the Middle Ages, and by the 18th century, exchanging cards and tokens of affection became common. Today, Valentine's Day is celebrated worldwide as a day to express love and affection for romantic partners through the exchange of cards, flowers, and gifts. While its historical origins are somewhat unclear, the celebration has evolved into a day dedicated to celebrating love in its various forms.
